The seminar will start at Askov Experimental Station at 12.00 on 16th June 2008 with an introduction to the Askov Long-term Experiments on Animal Manure and Mineral Fertilizers. These experiments were started in 1894 and constitute one of the world’s longest-running field experiments. Following the site visit, seminar participants are transported by bus to Sandbjerg Estate near Sønderborg where the seminar continues until Noon on 18th June 2008. The focus of the seminar will be on the use of long-continued field experiments as a research platform, and contributions to the seminar will illustrate the enormous research potential of long-term experiments with their associated data sets, sample archives and past research results.
The workshop will contribute to the identification of research areas that will benefit from the platform, including its use in the education of researchers at master and Ph.D. level. Further, the workshop will discuss the potential benefits of the Nordic platform experiments in terms of identifying beneficial and detrimental changes in soil quality, management thresholds for specific soil properties, and the feasibility of fixed indicator values versus prescribed managements in the implementation of the EU Framework Directive for protection of the soil resource.
